One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
